Research
The angiogenesis and endothelial biology group is interested in identifying novel genes involved in the growth of new blood vessels or angiogenesis and exploring their potential as therapeutic targets particularly in the treatment of cancer. We employ a combination of bioinformatics datamining and state of the art molecular biology to identify such genes and characterise their expression profile. We work in combination with Cancer Research Technology to identify collaborative partners in industry that allow us to develop the genes as targets. Recent discoveries we are actively working on include the endothelial roundabout gene Robo4 and endothelial protein disulphide isomerase.

In addition to these more applied interests, we are interested in understanding the fundamental molecular biology of angiogenesis. Thus, we study the biological activity and signalling mechanisms of the novel genes that we have identified. We use a range of models from in vitro proliferation, migration and tube forming assays to in vivo angiogenesis assays and the development of the vasculature in the zebrafish and mouse. The latter requires expert transgenesis that is performed in collaboration with Cancer Research UK.
