School of Immunity and Infection


The School of Immunity and Infection is one of five schools in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences with over 300 staff and students. Staff in the School undertake teaching and research in Immunology, Infection, Virology, Hepatology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Cell and Molecular biology, Stem Cell Biology and Gene Regulation and Anatomy.

The School has an active internationally recognised research profile with an annual research income of about £8m.  Direct funding for research is provided by many of the major sponsors of medical research including the MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome, NIH, EU, CRUK, ARC, LRF and DOH.  Current research projects and initiatives include an MRC Centre and a NHIR sponsored Liver Biomedical Research Unit.  Research groups are based in the recently built Institute for Biomedical Research which provides and interactive environment with state of the art facilities and excellent access to core facilities to support world class research. 

The School offers numerous opportunities for clinical and non clinical scientists to study for postgraduate research degrees in its research specialties, and currently hosts 70 PhD students.

The School also hosts one of the largest clinical immunology diagnostic services in the country, providing a comprehensive repertoire of tests including immunophenotyping in haematolymphoid malignancy and immunodeficiency, autoimmune serology, immunochemistry, allergy, cellular and neuroimmunology.
